High School Essay Contest

Monday - Wednesday, November 14-16, 2022

What is GIS?

GIS stands for Geographic Information Systems. GIS uses location technology to answer questions, make better decisions, and solve some of the world’s toughest problems.

Essay Topic

Write an essay that specifies how GIS is or was used to identify a problem, monitor changes, respond to events, or understand trends. Explain how GIS has made an impact in today’s world.

Deadline

All entries must be received by Tuesday, November 9th, 2022 at 5pm Central Time.

Procedure and Rules

  • Students should submit their entries via email to houstonareagisdayorg@gmail.com
  • Student must attend a high school within the State of Texas.
  • Student must be a high school junior or senior (grades 11-12).
  • Student must be sponsored by a teacher.
  • Each student is limited to submit one (1) essay.
  • The essay should be between 500 to 600 words in length.
  • Teachers are limited to sponsor three (3) students per school.
  • A cover page should be included with each essay and will not count towards the 500 word limit.
  • The cover page should include the following information:
    • First and last name
    • Address (street, city, state, and zip)
    • Contact email address
    • Contact phone number
    • School classification (junior or senior)
    • School name
    • School address (street, city, state, and zip)
    • Sponsor teacher’s name.

Criteria

The essays will be judged by a panel of GIS Professionals.

  • Quality of Composition (25%)
  • Appropriate Use of the Topic (50%)
  • Creativity & Originality (25%)

Prizes

  • 1st Place - $300
  • 2nd Place - $150
  • 3rd Place - $50

The winners will be announced during the closing session of Texas GIS Day, Day 2 which is Tuesday, November 15th, 2022.

Houston-Galveston Area Council (H-GAC) will mail the prizes directly to the winners after the event.
