Poster Competition

Each year, TxGIS Day hosts a geospatial student poster exhibition and competition. This event is judged by a panel of audience members and experts in the field.

We invite all students from colleges and universities in Texas to submit their ongoing or completed geospatial work. Participants will have the opportunity to win prizes as listed below.

  • Abstract and poster (powerpoint or pdf file) should be submitted electronically to a cloud service (Google Drive, Dropbox, Box, etc.) by the deadline. Submit the abstract & shareable link to the poster file by clicking the submit button below.

Eligibility

  • The TxGIS Day Texas A&M poster competition is open to all current Texas A&M graduate and undergraduate students.

Poster Display

  • In 2022, all posters will be displayed in an online virtual poster gallery.

Poster Competition

You are encouraged to attend to discuss your project, but it is not mandatory to participate.

Winners will be announced on Wednesday, November 18 at the TxGIS Day Awards session.

Competition Rules

  • Any GIS and/or Remote Sensing work will be accepted.
  • Submission may be of ongoing or completed work.
  • Submissions may be for individual or team work.
  • You may submit unlimited entries per person.
  • A map is not required on your submission, but you are submitting to a GIS Day Competition, so...
  • Submissions should include introduction, objectives, approach, results, discussion, and conclusions (or their equivalents).
  • Submissions must include a clear statement on the Map Geodetics. This should identify the Projected CRS, Datum, etc.
  • Submissions must clearly state map scale.
  • Submissions must make effective use of Geographic Information - appropriate use and portrayal of spatial data.
  • Submissions must demonstrate accuracy - grammar, punctuation, spelling, text font, text size, figures, tables.
  • Submissions must use effective design/layout - logical organization and visual flow of text and graphics.
  • Submissions must have visual appeal - color coordination, geometry, accents, highlights, use of symbology.
  • Submissions should demonstrate effective communication - understandable and concise.
  • Submisisons must be original - unique work.
  • Submissions must be a poster of size: 36"W X 24"H.
  • Submissions should use landscape orientation (PREFERRED).
  • Submissions must be in pdf or jpeg format - pdf format is PREFERRED.
  • Submissions may not to exceed 10MB.
  • Winners do not have to be present to win but maintain the responsibility of collecting any prizes that are won in the contest.
  • Winners will be responsible for any government taxes.
  • Prizes - 1st, 2nd and 3rd place prizes will be awarded.
  • Only one (1) prize can be awarded per map entry (even if a map has multiple authors, only one prize is awarded).

Call for Abstracts

The GIS Team at the Texas Department of State Health Services invites abstract submissions for poster or web application presentations on GIS-related public health topics as part of the agency’s celebration of GIS Day on November 16th , 2022, at 1100 W 49th St, Austin, TX 78756. There will be virtual and in-person options for attendance. Please submit abstracts by completing this form.

Participants are encouraged to submit a poster or web application that highlights the applications of geospatial technologies in public health-related topics, such as: health care accessibility, epidemiology, disaster preparedness and response, or disease ecology. Abstract submissions should include the following, submitted by October 14 th , 2022: Title, author(s) and affiliation(s), presentation type (poster or web application), attendance type (in-person or virtual), and one-paragraph abstract of the presenter’s project (150-word limit).

Prizes

Submitted posters and web applications from current undergraduate and graduate students will be automatically included in a student competition, with separate judging and prizes for posters and web applications if there are enough submissions of each type. Students should be aware that their submission should provide enough background information for the viewer to understand the public health issue, geographic methods, and the research project’s results. Winners will be announced at the conclusion of the planned GIS Day activities.

Poster Specifications

The GIS Team will print completed posters free of charge. Printed posters will be displayed in the lobby of the Robert Bernstein Building at the DSHS Central Campus from November 12th-16th in recognition of Geography Awareness Week. Posters will also be showcased virtually on the GIS Team’s website.

Web Application Specifications

All web applications final versions must be submitted via email as a link by November 9th, 2022 to GIS@dshs.texas.gov.

Applications will be showcased in a virtual gallery on the GIS Team’s website. Applications can be completed using any platform, such as ArcGIS Online or R Shiny, but must include an interactive map component and be publicly viewable.
